How can "minority babies" outnumber the "whites among US infants", i.e., all the rest?
If white infants are outnumbered, then they are the minority "among US infants" and those who outnumber them must be the majority.
But even when reporting the reproductive eclipse of the European population, the non-whites, in PC America, must be granted the privileged status of being referred to as "the minority," i.e., people deserving a privileged status due to the oppression they must be suffering at the hands of those presumptively racist white people now being trashed by their own government.
An honest headline would have been:
"White babies in American outnumbered by non-white," but then that makes it rather too clear what the Obama/Clinton plan for white people in America really is.

Brilliant Billionaires No. 17: Elon Musk's Pipedream, Shooting People Down Tubes
Elon Musk proposes shooting people in capsules at incredible speed down a tube from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

The idea is not new. In fact, pneumatic tube systems were a standard feature in many department stores prior to WW2. A sales clerk placed the customer's itemized bill plus their cash in a capsule that was fired upstairs or downstairs as the case might be to the accounting office, where the bill would be checked, change made and returned via the same pneumatic system. Here's a modern version of it:
Musk's proposal is simply to scale the thing up (not much) and shoot people down evacuated tubes at hypersonic speed.
But why? In the age of telepresence via Skype, etc., who needs to be shot down a tube from San Francisco to Los Angeles? Who needs or would want to go to Los Angeles by any means? There is obviously no need, or any sensible demand for such a system, which offers travel under appalling conditions with the risk of being turned into spam should the thing hit the buffers.
The result of applying technology to travel was, until the early post-war era, generally beneficent. The Pullman car beat a horse drawn wagon or stage coach hugely, in comfort, safety and speed. Lulled by the clickety-clack of iron wheels over unwelded rails, the railway passenger could snooze, wool-gather, or quietly work the Times crossword puzzle as the countryside slid by wreathed in puffs of smoke and steam from the work of mechanical art hauling the train.
The steam powered passenger liner vastly exceeded in speed, reliability, safety and comfort the sailing clipper, while in the air, Britain's Imperial Airways used double-decker Empire flying boats to carry passengers in sophisticated luxury from Southampton Water to the Cape, via Cairo, Luxor, Khartoum, Port Bell, and Victoria Falls — in a mere four and half days.
Sadly, today, travel is reverting to the vast discomforts and dangers of the distant past. If Musk has his way, railways are to be replaced by windowless drainpipes, in which passengers will travel in a recumbent posture in a capsule so small that they are unable to raise their heads, let alone use a washroom. Passenger liners have already been replaced by gigantic floating holiday camps replete with casinos, massage parlors, movie palaces, bars, nightclubs and the opportunity to eat oneself to death, while passenger aircraft are designed like Japanese subway trains to accommodate the maximum number in the minimum of comfort.
But the Russians, at least, aren't sold on the drain train. Instead, they plan on building a 70-kilometer tube track for the transport of goods, which is very sensible. In fact, moving inanimate stuff is what the pneumatic tube system was originally designed for and all it is good for.
What would be clever, though no billionaire has seen fit to do it, is devise plans for reconstruction of cities to allow people to live close to where they work, shop and find rest and recreation, thereby eliminating the need for most travel. Admittedly redeveloping urban settlements would be more expensive than building Musk’s Shotgun Shuttle. But we are in dire need of economic stimulus, and in the long run, the payoff in time and energy saved by abolishing the daily commute would be enormous.

Did Cameron Call the Brexit Vote to Blackmail the EU?
Here, at the Daily Bell, Putin's comment that Cameron called the Brexit referendum to blackmail the EU is examined and plausibly explained. In brief, the Daily Bell suggests, Cameron threatened the EU with Brexit unless the EU made certain concessions to the City of London's financial interests. Those concessions having been made behind closed doors, Cameron's job now is to ensure the failure of the Brexit campaign.
Aided by the murder of Saint Jo Cox, the first martyr for mass Muslim immigration, the EU, and globalization, it looks as though Cameron's blackmail, if that is what it was, has succeeded. Any hope for a majority Brexit vote now would likely require Nigel Farage to have himself shot by a maniac draped in the EU flag, making Farage a worthy successor to St. George as the patron saint of the English.

The New Tyranny, Mind Control, Education and Islam
The Irish Savant reports on a longstanding project to dumb down the American masses by subverting public education.
The evidence is that for years now, education in America has increasingly focused not on instilling useful skills, a capacity for critical thought, or the love of knowledge, but on indoctrination in political correctness. Thus, reports the Savant:

Donald Trump’s Unanswerable Questions About Immigration

Whether it was precisely CBS who were eager to tell us, or Orlando law enforcement, with CBS just passing on what they got, I don’t know, and it doesn’t much matter. It shows the mindset of authorities at all levels in our society. That is actually how people in authority think: not merely editors of liberal newspapers or TV stations, but managers and leaders in the military and law enforcement, corporate bosses, bureaucrats and politicians, college administrators, all the way down to schoolteachers and librarians.
That’s how they think. Diversity is our strength! That’s the state ideology; it’s the air we breathe.
It’s also a big fat lie.
I really don’t know what it will take to knock that big fat lie on the head and kill it for good. Nine-eleven should have done it in all logic; but no, we just doubled down on our diversity gamble, admitting more Muslims for settlement in the decade after 9/11 than we had in the decade before. Every poor person should raise chickens, says Bill.
“They’re a good investment.”he says. “Suppose a new farmer starts with five hens. One of her neighbors owns a rooster to fertilize the hens’ eggs. After three months, she can have a flock of 40 chicks.”
Wow. So after five years at that rate of multiplication “she” (or I guess it could be a fella, but let’s keep this PC) could have five trillion chicks, which, says Bill, would have a sale price [when full grown] of $5 per chicken — which is typical in West Africa.”
So there you are, being poor is just about being stupid really, and anyone following Bill’s easy to follow tip can become rich beyond the dreams of avarice in practically no time at all.
Problem for some, though, may be getting that first chicken. So why doesn’t Bill give everyone in the United States a chicken to get them started. At five bucks a piece it would cost him practically nothing out of his $79 billion pile. And for those without a yard to keep a live chicken, no doubt a fresh frozen, oven-ready bird would be most acceptable.

"First it was text, then pictures and videos," reports the Daily Mail, "and now Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisions a world where users share their thoughts and experiences telepathically."
"During a live Q&A yesterday," the DM continues, "Zuckerberg described a world that goes beyond virtual reality, which allows users to capture thoughts and share in a format that makes them available to the world. The tech tycoon believes this technology could be available in just 50 years, but also noted it isn't something Facebook is currently working on."
Meantime, those of us able to speak or write can just go on exchanging thoughts by word of mouth, in writing, etc. Of course those unable to articulate a clear thought will find Zuckerberg's ThoughtBook or whatever it will be called an effective, if not useful, way of spreading their state of confusion to the world.
Which all makes you wonder how smart your average tech billionaire really is.

Washington Post, June 9, 2016: Most of my former colleagues at the State Department will be appalled by the assertion, but much of the media-fed angst about Donald Trump’s dearth of foreign policy expertise is contrived.
Our cadre of neoconservative foreign policy experts, unhumbled after marching us into a reckless war in Iraq and a poorly conceived one in Afghanistan, who applauded as we bombed Libya and bitterly resent our having failed to bomb Bashar al-Assad in Syria, are frightened. Wisely, they often focus on comments that Trump has made on issues that are of less genuine interest to them — from his strident stance on immigration to his “threat” to our liberties to his sometimes deplorable commentary about women and some minorities. But what really troubles them is his generally level-headed and unmessianic attitude toward foreign affairs. Trump has no desire to make the rest of the world in our image; he is concerned only about the world not making America in its image.
The neocons bemoan Trump’s rejection of a global role for the United States, but Trump has no intent to withdraw the United States from the world stage. He only rejects the wanton use of our young men and women on foreign adventures of questionable value.

Why?
In 2001, someone (nobody, including members of the 9/11 Commission, knows for sure who), knocked down New York's World Trade Center Towers One and Two with airliners. Later the same day, World Trade Center Tower Seven collapsed into its own footprint though not struck by an airliner — the only steel-frame high-rise (other than WTC 1 and 2) ever to do so except as the result of a controlled demolition. Very strange. But nobody to think about it: OK? Just blame it on the Muzzies.
Then the West embarked on a multi-trillion-dollar campaign (very profitable to some, e.g., the Bush-connected Carlyle Group: "we provide the gear to bomb places to Hell, then we get the contract to rebuild") to poke sticks into Muslim bees' nest in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and now Syria. At the same time the gates of Vienna, Paris, London, Berlin, and Miami were flung open to a flood of Muslims, many of whom are intent on the conquest of the West. This they say, is to be achieved by the womb not the sword, which shows the gentleness of Islam, which is so much admired by the Western Cuckservative who never tire of assuring us that Islam is "a religion of love." Still, as the Miami night club massacre among other recent events shows, a bit of sword-, or in this case gun-play, to clear some space in the decadent West is apparently* considered a good thing by some members of the Islamic settler advance party.
These developments raise the question, why is the Western elite conniving at the West's racial and cultural destruction? The answer, has two parts.

They are the ones, they imagine, who will decide who goes to the gulag, and who is to be shot on the spot, Lenin's remedy for any opposition.
Second, there is the Money Power, which through control of the media, Hollywood, FaceBook, etc., supports the lib-left effort to make political correctness the religion of the West. They do so in the knowledge that the loony PC multiculti agenda will destroy the sovereign, democratic nation state, and make way for global governance, i.e., government by:
(1) Trade deals negotiated by the largest capitalist entities (about 150 firms control most international business). These are the deals that Treason Party leaders including Obama, Cameron, Merkel, etc., are seeking to adopt right now, deals that transfer large powers from the nation state to international corporations; and
(2) International organizations such as the EU, WTO and the UN, which are easily manipulated by the money power by the usual mundane forms of bribery and corruption (for example, wasn't UN Sec. Gen Kofi Annan on the take in the Iraq oil for food deal?).

At the same time the gates of Vienna, Paris, London, Berlin, and Miami were flung open to a flood of Muslims, many of whom are intent on the conquest of the West. This they say, is to be achieved by the womb not the sword, which shows the gentleness of Islam, which is so much admired by the Western Cuckservative who never tire of assuring us that Islam is "a religion of love." Still, as the Miami night club massacre among other recent events shows, a bit of sword-, or in this case gun-play, to clear some space in the decadent West is apparently* considered a good thing by some members of the Islamic settler advance party.
These developments raise the question, why is the Western elite conniving at the West's racial and cultural destruction? The answer, has two parts.

Tricky Trump versus Crooked Hillary: Deciding the Future With a War of Insults
Trump's a racist. You know that? Even Paul Ryan, GOP Speaker of the House of Representatives, says so. Is Trump a Fascist? Well the New York Times liberally smears him with the appellation as it considers the question based on a presumption of guilt. As for warmongering, Trump's the worstest, most dangerous, loony warmonger out there, according to Hillary.
Yet Trump's rising in the polls, while Hillary's disapproval rating continues to surge. What's going on. Are millions upon millions of Americans fascistic, racist warmongers, or what?
The reality is that the insults have nothing to do with, well, reality. Simply, they are the liberal-left's chief instruments of debate: hate speech in other words. Such insults work well to terrorize citizens living under an undemocratic system such as the EU, where to be fingered as a racist, a xenophobe or some kind of hater or denialist can mean jail time. But in a freer society, not only do such insults lose shock value and become stale through over use, but they are likely to cause offense among the very people they are supposed to win to the liberal cause. Who, for example, among those who are white, has not more than once been unjustly smeared as a racist either directly or by implication? Such experience makes for a sharp reaction when people find the political representation of their legitimate interests being dissed as racism.
But then comes Trump. He uses insults alright, but they're fresh and often funny. "Low energy JEB." Yeah, JEB really did come over as a limp rag. "Little Marko" was another highly personal insult, but, well, the guy is kind of little. And how you gonna hit back? Call Trump a "sizeist" or a "morphologist?" Would sound kind of stupid wouldn't it. Anyhow, the main effect of the jibe was likely aimed not so much at the audience than at Little Marko himself. Short people for some reason hate being short. It gives them an inferiority complex that can turn them into megalomaniacal politicians and warmongers like Napoleon — I know, my mother-in-law is short. Most likely, therefore, calling Marko "little" simply threw him off balance, spoiled his concentration, and explains why he began repeating himself like a parrot.
"Lyin' Ted" was not exactly an imaginative descriptive, but the name fitted, so Cruz had to wear it. "Crooked Hillary" seemed like a not so original variant on "Lyin' Ted," but then out came all that stuff on the Clinton Foundation, described as "an ongoing criminal enterprise engaged in money laundering and soliciting bribes in exchange for political, policy and legislative favors to individuals, corporations and even governments both foreign and domestic," according to reports from inside the FBI, plus ServerGate, leaving little doubt that Hillary is, indeed, about as crooked as a politician can get, which prompted Judge Jeanine to ask Trump:
"So, why do people support her" (after 10.00 minutes in this video). To which Trump responded:
And note how the word "habit" recurs, again, and again, and again. Kind of sticks in the mind, doesn't it.
Yeah, very smart.
But is Trump immune to his own tactics? Surely not. So what labels would suit Trump? Trump has already invoked Richard Nixon's "Silent Majority", so how about a variation on Nixon's soubriquet of Tricky Dicky. Tricky Trump rolls of the tongue smoothly and would draw attention to Trump's growing list of big lies. On Iraq, no he wasn't against it before the war started, he was for it. Likewise, Libya (after 1:25 in this video, Trump lying about Libya). Playing the anti-war crowd for suckers may have looked like a good option for Trump at the outset of his campaign, but exposing his crass mendacity on past wars could turn things around sharply.

Trump Disappoints. Is Devious Donald the Ultimate Cuck?
Let's face it, Donald Trump is just about as much of a liar as Lyin' Ted. He claims to have been against the Iraq war, when lots of ordinary folks could see it would be a massive imperialist crime, but in fact he was for it. His only objection to it then seems to have been that the US wasn't intent on stealing Iraq's oil. Then he said he was against the Libyan intervention, though here he is (after 1 min:25 seconds) clearly exposed as a total liar. And again, his chief regret is that the US didn't steal Libya's oil.
What else is he lying about? Basically, Trump has adopted the intelligent citizen's critique of the US Government's foreign, economic and population policies. What he has to say about trade, immigration, wages and unemployment sounds as good to most ordinary folks as his line on Iraq and Libya. But is it any more genuine? What we're seeing is a salesman of genius selling hope to a nation that has been impoverished, demeaned and despised by a criminal ruling elite. Yet now we are to believe that America, and by extension the rest of the West, is to be saved by the Donald from exploitation by the likes of his wedding guest, Crooked Hillary.
Trump is surely the tip of a very large iceberg. Who knows what lies beneath the water. What we can be sure of, though, is that every US President elected in living memory was expected to make the world a better place, yet with no exception that I can think of, all served anti-democratic interests that made the world a worse place for the mass of mankind. Why would a sleazy, thrice married, four-times-bankrupt casino operator prove any better than those who went before?
Now, it seems, Trump is backing away from his stand on political correctness. Should we really be surprised? Maybe the whole thing was fake. Did Megyn Kelly (or someone else at Fox News) set it up for him with her first-debate question about calling women "fat pigs" etc.? Now she's Trump's great friend, which seems quite a turnabout? And Kelly's boss, Poop Murdoch, the pornographer of Sky TV (I love how Sky used to push its pay-porn channels in Britain as "the dirtiest legally permitted", alongside Holy Rupe's Christian channels), is backing Trump, as is casino magnate and self-proclaimed richest-Jew-in-the-world, Sheldon Adelson, who's promised $100 million for the campaign.
So, sorry, but I think Trump's a false prophet, who, if elected, will probably make more money off the Presidency than Hillary could. In fact, it seems pretty clear, we're all doomed. These are the end times for human civilization. It's a re-run of degenerate Rome, but this time it's Rome with nukes, scientific brainwashing, FaceBook addiction, and a reality TV star gunning to be the next Caesar.

Christian Theology Is Bunk: But Jesus Lives
For where two or three are gathered togetherOver at the Irish Savant, Anonymous remarks: "I respect anyone who lives a Christian life" but goes on to say that, in his experience, churchgoers don't live such a life. This, he seems to fear, is the rot that underlies the ongoing death of the West.

But, in fact, the sinfulness of professed Christians is not the problem he supposes. Jesus, after all, supped with whores and tax collectors and found their company much preferable to that of holier-than-thou orthodox Jews.
The real problem for Christians today is that only the most simple-minded and uneducated can possibly believe the Bible. It's all a fairy tale, with some moral guidance thrown in. What's more, the big churches — Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican — are based on that Pauline mumbo-jumbo encapsulated in the Apostolic Creed, unrelated to anything Jesus is reported to have said during his lifetime.

What we do know is that the Gospel accounts sure as Hell aren't gospel truth. They were written a generation or several after the death of Jesus by we know not whom with we know not what axes to grind. Further, to anyone with a modern mind and a clear head, all the stuff about angels, virgin birth, walking on water, the Resurrection and Ascension is obvious bunk, apparently derived from ancient Egyptian and Greek myths.
So Christianity is all crap, right?

And the Nativity scene, made central to our perception of Christianity through the artistic genius of Saint Francis, is infinitely more charming than stories about a reindeer-hauled sled and a jolly old fella in red climbing down chimneys.
The essence of Christianity has to be seen in the works of the saints, Jesus who, we are told, sacrificed himself in obedience to what he believed to be the will of God, being the first.
More generally, Christianity amounts simply to the golden rule, the still small voice of conscience, the Kingdom of Heaven within. This is what underlies what is most admirable in the Western tradition of art, law, scholarship, and public service. It is what has allowed the best in the West to thrive and spread the benefit of their gifts to society as a whole. But it is this openness that constitutes the West's greatest vulnerability, now that it exists under the government of a treasonous elite. We are wide open to infiltration by organized, collectivist, groups propagating alien ideologies, from Political Correctness and the worship of billionaires to Communism and Islam.
Christians needs to forget arcane theological disputes of no moral significance and attend to the defense of their civilization. Concerning churches, music, art, myth or dogma, take it or leave it as suits your temperament.

Donald Trump: Iraq War, Trade, Immigration, and Foreign Relations
Anyone who thinks Donald Trump will be a great US President must value hope far above experience. The only realistic question is whether Donald Trump as president would do less harm than whoever might be the alternative — any good he might do, being considered, surely, as a bonus. To judge that question, one has to judge not only the merits of Trump's policy proposals but whether there's any truth in anything he promises.
The American Empire
Donald Trump has repeatedly and falsely stated that he was opposed the Iraq war before it began.
Later, he changed his tune, but it's easy to be right after the event.
And in the case of the Iraq war, it wasn't hard to be right even before the event.
The Case for war was a transparent fabrication: the bollocks about Iraqi drones of death attacking US cities was, well, typical Fox News war-pushing bollocks, just like the aluminum tubes flaunted by lying New York Times reporter Judy Miller, Colin Powell's vial of biological weapons agent, aka soap powder, at the UN General Assembly, and Phony Blair's "sexed up" dossier on Saddam's nukes, cut and pasted off the Internet. But none speaking from a position of authority but Dr. David Kelly, UN WMD inspector, dared call such treason treason and he appears to have been suicided for his trouble.
Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11, Saddam had no WMD, and Saddam had no time for terrorist organizations. That was obvious to anyone with a brain, but Donald J. Trump didn't see it or didn't wish to say it before the war started, when to say it might have mattered.
The implication is clear. Trump has no problem with wars of imperialistic aggression. He just thinks that Iraq was botched. It would be foolish, therefore, to suppose that, as president, Trump, who boasts of being the most "militaristic person," would hesitate to use the American military if he thought it would serve America's hegemonic aims.
Trade
Trump says he will bring off-shored jobs home. Well, he'll have to. In fact any president will have to, unless they are prepared to see the US economy implode and the mass of Americans reduced to abject poverty and perhaps open revolt (Which is why Homeland Security has six hollow point bullets for every citizen). We're in an election year and the economy is dead stalled. Growth is zero, job creation is zero, and the number of those of working age who are out of the work force exploded last month by six hundred and sixty-four thousand, closing rapidly on one hundred million. Meantime, the unemployment rate fell. LOL. Statistics show whatever we want them to show, neither more nor less, as Humpty Dumpty would have said.
Immigration
Trump is against inviting the Mexicans to walk in and retake Texas, California, etc. That seems a reasonable position and it's difficult to see any political leader standing indefinitely in total opposition to the mass of the population, whether in the US or Europe on the question of the very existence of the nation state.
Foreign Relations
All nations are headed by psychopaths, or politicians who have learned that success is possible only by emulating a psychopath. Trump, therefore, will be no less quick than Clinton or some other Obama clone to shaft Putin if he thought it would promote the interests of the Empire. Thing is though, American policy has driven Russia into the arms of China, which as Trump has pointed out, is a very stupid thing to do. As senile old Leonid Brezhnev said, it would be in the best interests of the white race for America and Russia to work together not against one another. Trump apparently agrees, whereas the entire Obama/Bush/Clinton/Cameron/Hollande/Merkel treason alliance, seem committed to the death of Western civilization and the European people.
Conclusion
You may not trust Trump in the least, but why would you vote for a cuck openly committed to the destruction of your people and civilization when you could vote for someone who claims with both realism and a semblance of credibility to be on your side? This, if I understand him, is exactly the conclusion reached by Dilbert creator, Scot Adams.

The Truth a Treasonous Elite Will Not Allow to be Stated
Here is what the Irish Savant correctly describes as "a brilliant exposition of the West’s predicament that appears as a comment by reader Dan O’Connor in The Spectator. Or at least it did. It’s since been consigned to the ether."
The liberals would like you to believe that it is the result of a gradual process of public enlightenment. But given that the process ends in death of the West and the occupation of Europe by adherents of a mediaeval theocracy, it looks like either: (1) proof that liberalism is a contagious mental disease, which if allowed to spread unimpeded will destroy any civilization it infects, or (2) that the spread of liberal ideas and the destruction of the Western nations is a calculated policy of national genocide imposed by Western elites.
But if the latter assumption is correct, what is the underlying reason for such a policy?
The answer is the drive to globalize. The Money Power has always wanted total freedom to move:
Hence the need of the Money Power to destroy the nation state, the process to begin with the most powerful states. Hence the psychological warfare to undermine the self-confidence and morality of the people of the West by the substitution of political correctness for Christianity.
The results are now in evidence. The European people are being genocided by their own governments, their fertility deliberately repressed by state funded abortion, no-fault divorce, and above-all, kindergarten through university sex "education" (i.e., inculcaton of the belief that the only sexual vice is reproduction).
Europeans are to be replaced by people without troublesome ideas about the rights of man, free speech, the rule of law and all such obstructive crap. In future, the inhabitants of Europe will exist to serve the corporate interest or they will cease to exist altogether.

If you occupied what was considered the ideological / moral centre ground in 1965, and went to sleep for 50 years and woke up in 2015 you’d find yourself occupying the ideological /moral ‘far right’. You didn’t have to budge one inch ideologically to find yourself there. The whizzing sound you heard was the ideological / cultural centre ground zooming over to the Cultural Marxist hard left.I pasted Dan O'Connors comment as a comment on Craig Murray's very liberal blog where, somewhat to my surprise, it was not only not deleted, but evoked several entirely civil responses, among them, a question from Herbie:

In other words, within the space of 50 years, morality, right, wrong, evil, good, normal, obvious, extreme, sanity, truth, beneficial, dangerous and the instinct for group preservation, has been inverted and stood upside down on its head.

Here's how the corporate interest humiliates Europeans who opposed to their

- production facilities where wages, working conditions and environmental regulation are lowest;
- capital where it can be invested most profitably; and

The Tolerance of Liberals: The Death of the West
Liberals pride themselves on their tolerance.
They are tolerant of adultery.
They are tolerant of partial birth abortion.
They are tolerant not only of homosexuality, but of the compulsory promotion of homosexuality among children.
likewise, they are more than tolerant of the teaching of fellatio to kindergarteners (on the assumption, presumably, that humans are just a less hairy variant of the bonobo ape).
And they are enthusiastically tolerant of the flooding of Europe by Muslims and other Third Worlders already the majority in many major Western cities.
In fact, as any liberal will proudly tell you, the only thing that a liberal cannot tolerate is intolerance.
In keeping with their tolerance of adultery, liberals regard adherents of the Mosaic law, whether Jewish, Christian or Muslim, as religious bigots, and liberals really hate bigots.
Consistent with their insistence on "a woman's right to choose," liberals call opponents of abortion, whether during the first trimester or when virtually indistinguishable from infanticide, oppressors of women, sexists, male chauvinist pigs, or religious maniacs, and liberals really hate all of the above.
Liberals call those who maintain the Judeo/Christian tradition of marriage as a union of one man and one woman, homophobes, or in the case of Muslim polygamists, Islamophobes, and liberals really hate both.

The Illogic of Libertarianism
Following Monday's announcement that the US Libertarian Party has nominated former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson as its 2016 presidential candidate (he ran in 2012 and got 1% of the votes), we reproduce here our piece on the logical absurdity of libertarianism that first appeared on Wordpress, December 11, 2013.
Libertarians consider freedom the highest value and government the greatest restraint on freedom, from which they conclude that government is an evil to be eliminated.
But given human nature, the variability of human desires and the scarcity of resources to satisfy those desires, human existence in the absence of government, or in what Hobbes called a state of nature, will degenerate into a war of all against all:
… there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain, and consequently, no culture of the earth, no navigation, nor the use of commodities that may be imported by sea, no commodious building, no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force, no knowledge of the face of the earth, no account of time, no arts, no letters, no society, and which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.This fact, libertarians can never grasp, for if they did, they would not be libertarians.

To deny the miserable lack of freedom under a condition of anarchy, libertarians make claims about rights as though such pious talk would tame the will of those intent on a course that infringes the liberty of others. That their rights, God-given or otherwise, can nowhere be exercised freely except where they are enshrined in law and enforced by government seems beyond libertarian comprehension.

Bizarrely, libertarians may invoke authority in support of their ideology, Adam Smith being often cited. Indeed, in Edinburgh, the Adam Smith Institute claims to be “Britain’s leading libertarian think tank” (is there really more than one?). But Adam Smith was no anarchist. He was a social scientist whose great work The Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations was concerned with the factors underlying not liberty but the creation of wealth, and to Smith it was clear that general prosperity could be achieved only under a government.
Smith devoted an entire section of the Wealth of Nations (Book V) to the nature of good government, identifying four necessary functions:
National Defense:The first duty, and necessary expense, of the state is defence: protecting the society from the violence or invasion of others.Thus, according to Smith, the accumulation of wealth, which so many libertarians believe should occur on a tax-free basis, is in fact possible only under publicly funded government protection:
Justice:Just as the state must protect people from foreign enemies, so must it protect them against domestic ones. …
Among nations of hunters, there is hardly any property. People usually have nothing to gain from injuring others, and there is little need for any formal administration of justice. But where property exists, things are otherwise. There are potential gains from theft. The avarice and ambition of the rich, or the desire for ease and enjoyment among the poor, can lead to private property being invaded. The acquisition of valuable property – which may take years to build up – necessarily requires the establishment of a civil government and a magistracy to preserve order and justice. The affluence of the rich excites the indignation of the poor, who are often both driven by want, and prompted by envy, to invade his possessions. It is only under the shelter of the civil magistrate that the owner of that valuable property, which is acquired by the labour of many years, or perhaps of many successive generations, can sleep a single night in security.
Civil government, so far as it is instituted for the security of property, is in reality instituted for the defence of the rich against the poor, or of those who have some property against those who have none at all.
Public Works:
The third role for the state is to build and maintain public works that could never yield a profit to individuals: institutions to facilitate commerce, the education of the young and the instruction of people of all ages.
Education:
In the matter of public education, Smith, himself the beneficiary of publicly supported schooling, was ambivalent. There was a strict limit, he believed, to the value of education for the masses:
The man whose whole life is spent in performing a few simple operations, of which the effects too are, perhaps, always the same, or very nearly the same, has no occasion to exert his understanding, or to exercise his invention in finding out expedients for removing difficulties which never occur.
But Smith would likely have taken a different view had he lived in a technological age where the returns to investment in education are great but its cost exceeds the means of many students.
Monopoly:
Smith made numerous references to the harm inflicted on the public by monopolies, which he described as conspiracies against the public:
People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.Smith may have advocated no laws against monopoly, but he recognized them as an evil inherent in the system of trade regulation that he wished to see replaced by a competitive free market:
Monopoly of one kind or another, indeed, seems to be the sole engine of the mercantile system.
Recognizing the necessity of government, Smith recognized also the necessity of taxation and proposed principles of taxation that any small-government conservatives would approve. Certainly, he would have considered absurd, the notion that taxation is necessarily theft.
