So to drive Covid deaths to virtually zero, it was necessary only to warn the overweight and elderly to take care, avoid crowds, especially of the young and socially active, and let everyone else get on with their lives.
But the opportunity to subject the population to tyrannical control while driving national debt to World War levels through multiple profitable boondoggles for their friends, was too great for any democratic government to resist.

I was planning to publish a roundup today of the many thoughtful responses to Paul Rossi’s essay. I’m going to save that post for Sunday, because I was just sent this letter that has my jaw on the floor. It was written by a Brearley parent named Andrew Gutmann.
If you don’t know about Brearley, it’s a private all-girls school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It costs $54,000 a year and prospective families apparently have to take an “anti-racism pledge” to be considered for admission. (In the course of my reporting for this piece I spoke to a few Brearley parents.)
Gutmann chose to pull his daughter, who has been in the school since kindergarten, and sent this missive to all 600 or so families in the school earlier this week. Among the lines:
If Brearley’s administration was truly concerned about so-called “equity,” it would be discussing the cessation of admissions preferences for legacies, siblings, and those families with especially deep pockets. If the administration was genuinely serious about “diversity,” it would not insist on the indoctrination of its students, and their families, to a single mindset, most reminiscent of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

Two doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine were found to have only a 10.4% efficacy against mild-to-moderate infections caused by the B.1.351 South Africa variant, according to a phase 1b-2 clinical trial published on Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. This is a cause for grave concern as the South African variants share similar mutations to the other variants leaving those vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine potentially exposed to multiple variants.
This week, the Food and Drug Administration called for a halt in the administration of the single dose vaccine for COVID-19 manufactured by Johnson and Johnson. The halt was ascribed to the rare incidence of blood clots that could potentially be related to the vaccine.

When the news broke about the pause of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine Tuesday, one Coast family was already living with a tragedy they believe was caused by the vaccine.

In Britain, where nearly everyone's been vaccinated, Government Advisers, aka, the notorious SAGE, are calling for more lockdowns.The London Independent reports:

Professor John Edmunds, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, told ITV’s Peston show that if mass testing events, such as those currently underway in Southwark and Barnet in London, “don’t work that well … then it’s possible we’ll have to impose some sort of local restrictions back in place ...”.
And, from UK PM Boris Johnson:
"The reduction in numbers... has not been achieved by the vaccination programme... the bulk of the work in reducing the disease has been done by the lockdown"
and despite the mass vaccination campaign, thus far the world's most intensive, Johnson said:

Last fall, immunologist and biotech entrepreneur Dr. Michael Yeadon argued that a Covid second wave was impossible, saying "that's not how epidemics work." The pathogen, he stated, spreads until it runs out of susceptible hosts. All those who survive infection acquire robust and durable immunity, and the population thus achieves what is known as herd immunity, which makes a second wave impossible.
However, as it emerges, the data for many countries appear to contradict Dr. Yeadon. Thus, for example, in Britain, the second wave of Covid deaths appears, if anything, slightly greater than the first.
There are many questions that may be raised as to the validity of the data. How many, for example, of those who died with Covid died because of Covid? And how were the reported number of Covid cases affected by the availability of tests and the reliability of tests?

"Variants Projected to Climb in May, Tighter Measures Urged," reads the Page 4 headline in today's (Victoria) TimesColonist.
And, as the article so headlined reports, British Columbia now has 102 Covid patients in intensive care.
Wow, that sure is scary.
Um, well maybe not, though sure it's tough on the unfortunate 102.
One hundred and two ICU patients equals zero point six naughts two percent of British Columbia's population of five million.
So how unusual is it to have that many ICU patients with a respiratory disease?
Perhaps not very. Respiratory disease, mainly flu or pneumonia, is a major cause of death, and those deaths usually come in a bunch at the peak of the flu season. So to have half of British Columbia's ICU beds occupied by Covid patients at what is supposed to be a new peak in Covid infections, is neither surprising, nor especially alarming.
What is, if not alarming, certainly remarkable is the change in the ratio of reported Covid cases to deaths over the course of the epidemic.
On May 6, 2020, which was the peak of the epidemic in British Columbia, as measured by deaths, 1450 new Covid cases were reported together with 189 Covid deaths.
Now, as we are reported to be battling a massive covid second wave, something surprising has happened:
While cases as reported the day before yesterday (April 8, 2021) are up more than five-fold from the May 6, 2020 peak, deaths are down five-fold, to a daily total of 38. So the ratio of deaths to cases has dropped from one in 7.7 to one in 210.
How to account for this?
Almost certainly it is the result of increased use of the PCR Covid test which has a huge false positive rate.
Because of the use of the highly misleading test, both cases and deaths are almost certainly being greatly exaggerated, but as the actual number of Covid deaths is declining, whereas the number being tested for Covid is increasing, the number of false positive cases inevitably grows faster than the number of false positive deaths.
But hear it from Dr. Yeadon, with reference to the UK, in this conversation with James Delingpole.
According to Yeadon, the Covid epidemic in Britain would be long over except that SAGE, the UK Government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies says it is not.
Further, he asserts that Britain achieved Covid19 herd immunity by the summer of last year, due largely to the existence in the population of pre-existent T-Cell immunity resulting from infection from other corona viruses, including several common cold viruses.
For similar reasons,it is likely that, in Canada, the Covid19 epidemic continues because the Government of Canada and Provincial premiers prefer to mess with peoples' lives and piss away billions for unnecessary Covid relief measures than acknowledge reality.

"Ephemeral experiences": You might never have heard this phrase, but it's a very important concept. These are brief experiences you have online in which content appears briefly and then disappears, leaving no trace. Those are the kinds of experiences we have been preserving in our election monitoring projects. You can't see the search results that Google was showing you last month. They're not stored anywhere, so they leave no paper trail for authorities to trace. Ephemeral experiences are, it turns out, quite a powerful tool of manipulation.
Are people at companies like Google aware of the power they have? Absolutely...
In a national study we conducted in 2013, in one demographic group -- moderate Republicans -- we got a shift of 80% after just one search, so some people are especially trusting of search results, and Google knows this. The company can easily manipulate undecided voters using techniques like this....
We have shown in controlled experiments that biased search suggestions can turn a 50‑50 split among undecided voters into a 90‑10 split, with no one having the slightest idea they have been manipulated.
Unfortunately, people mistakenly believe that computer output must be impartial and objective. People especially trust Google to give them accurate results.... They have no idea that they may have been driven to that web page by highly biased search results that favor the candidate Google is supporting.
Dwight D. Eisenhower did not talk about his accomplishments in his famous farewell speech of 1961. Instead, he warned us about the rise of a "technological elite" who could control public policy without anyone knowing. He warned us about a future in which democracy would be meaningless. What I have to tell you is this: The technological elite are now in control. You just don't know it. Big Tech had the ability to shift 15 million votes in 2020 without anyone knowing that they did so and without leaving a paper trail for authorities to trace. Our calculations suggest that they actually shifted at least six million votes to President Biden without people knowing. This makes the free-and-fair election -- a cornerstone of democracy -- an illusion.
I am not a conservative, so I should be thrilled about what these companies are doing. But no one should be thrilled, no matter what one's politics. No private company should have this kind of power, even if, at the moment, they happen to be supporting your side.
Do these companies think they are in charge? Are they planning a future that only they know for all of us? Unfortunately, there are many indications that the answers to these questions are yes.
One of the items that leaked from Google in 2018 was an eight‑minute video called "The Selfish Ledger." This video was never meant to be seen outside of Google, and it is about the power that Google has to reshape humanity, to create computer software that "not only tracks our behavior but offers direction towards a desired result."
How do we protect ourselves from companies like this?... You might have heard the phrase "regulatory capture" -- an old practice in which a large company that is facing punishment from the government works with the government to come up with a regulatory plan that suits the company.
When you are talking about, for example, "breaking up" Google, all this means is that we will force them to sell off a couple of the hundreds of companies they have bought.... the major shareholders are enriched by billions of dollars, and the company still has the same power and poses the same threats it does today....
[W]e were, in effect, doing the same thing to them that they do to us and our children 24 hours a day. Imagine that we were, in effect, looking over the shoulders of thousands of real people (with their permission), just as the Nielsen Company does with its network of families to monitor their television watching.
Imagine if these tech companies knew that they were being monitored -- that even the answers they are giving people... were being monitored. Do you think they would risk sending out targeted vote reminders to members of just one political party? I doubt it very much, because we would catch them immediately and report their manipulation to authorities and the media.
What can we do? In my opinion, the solution to almost all the problems these companies present is to set up large‑scale monitoring systems and to make them permanent -- not just in the United States, but around the world. Because monitoring is technology, it can keep up with whatever the new tech companies are throwing at us, and however they are threatening us, we can get them to stop.
I am envisioning a new nonprofit organization that specializes in monitoring what the tech companies are showing to voters, families, and children -- protecting democracy and the autonomy and independence of all citizens. There might also be a for‑profit spinoff that could serve as a permanent funding source for the nonprofit. The for‑profit spinoff could provide commercial services to campaigns, law firms, candidates, researchers, and many others.
And there's another way to completely eliminate the threats that Google poses to democracy and humanity.... our government could quickly end Google's monopoly on search by declaring that the database Google uses to generate search results is a "public commons," accessible to all. It is a very old legal concept, and it is a light-touch form of regulation. It would rapidly lead to the creation of thousands of competing search platforms, each appealing to different audiences.
