Lockdowns killed countless thousand due to missed cancer diagnoses (over a million cases in the US) and deferred treatment of cancer and other serious diseases, yet in the US, lockdown states had rates of Covid deaths no lower than those of non-lockdown states.
School closures achieved essentially nothing to restrict the spread of the disease, while inflicting serious loss of opportunity on children. Long-distance learning was a failure; school closures resulted in increased cases of child abuse, and imposed a particularly heavy burden on low-income households.
There is no evidence that mask wearing restricts viral spread, but it can induce overconfidence leading to behaviour that promotes viral spread. For children masking is psychologically harmful. During exercise, mask wearing is harmful.
Based on experience with other corona viruses, it is most probably that those who have had Covid will have persistent, effective and life-long immunity from severe disease and death from Covid.
The response to the virus by most governments worldwide has displayed a complete rejection of decades of relevant biological and immunological knowledge.
Vaccine passports are a bad idea because they cause increased resistance to vaccination, moreover, those who have already had the infection derive no benefit from vaccination, as they already have durable and robust immunity.
Most infections are mild or asymptomatic, and asymptomatic cases cause little disease spread.
Severe disease is limited almost entirely to a small and well identified section of the population, namely the elderly and those with other conditions.
Covid models upon which public policy responses in the Western world were based are inprecise at best and highly misleading at worst, and they drove many mistaken policy decisions.
Media coverage involved deliberate distortion of the data, and a serious lack of balance. On social media there was overt censorship of any who opposed the media's control over the message.
Those who advocated a strategy of focused protection of the most vulnerable were treated by the media as renegades, crazy people not following "the science."
The focus on lockdowns without regard for the collateral damage was an abandonment of the principles of public health management that must consider all health consequences, both physical and mental, of public policy.
The assumption that lockdowns would protect anyone, including the most vulnerable, proved false as the tremendous Covid death toll in care homes proved.
The failure of public health measures in the face of the Covid pandemic means that there has been a loss of trust in public health authorities: trust that must be rebuilt if we are to cope effectively with a future, and possibly much more serious, health emergency.
