Response to the Truckers' Convoy: Justin Trudeau's Smear Job versus Competent Leadership

If I had several hours and put my heart into it, I suspect I would have come up with a statement on Justin Trudeau's response to the Truckers' Convoy on the lines of Conrad Black's column, The PM's Smear Job, which appears in today's National Post

But since (a), the very rich Conrad Black, agree with him or not, is among Canada's very few competent journalists, and (b) his piece in the Post is free to read by all and sundry, the only sensible thing is to suggest that people read what Black has to say.

In this connection, the Maru survey of opinion concerning the Prime Ministers response to the Truckers' protest is worth noting:

A majority (53%) of Canadians think the Prime Minister has looked weak in the face of threats to the country

A plurality (44%) of Canadians think the Prime Minister has inflamed the situation

Only-one-in six (17%) Canadians think the Prime Minister has used every opportunity to calm things down and find a solution to the trucker's protest, compared to two thirds (64%) who say he has not done so

In particular it is worth noting that the 53% who think the Prime Minister has been weak and the 44% who think he has inflamed the situation yield a total of 97% of the population who believe that Justin Trudeau has failed the current test of leadership. Time, then, for Trudeau to step down or be pushed aside.
