The above chart (not shown) shows Imperial's assumptions: that Sweden's actions (the distancing, etc) would have a tiny effect. Only lockdown would do. Its modelling envisaged Sweden paying a heavy price for its rejection of lockdown, with 40,000 Covid deaths by 1 May and almost 100,000 by June.

The latest figure for Sweden is 2,680 deaths, with daily deaths peaking a fortnight ago. So Imperial College’s modelling – the same modelling used to inform the UK response – was wrong, by an order of magnitude. Sweden has now published its own graph, saying its R was never near the 4 that Imperial imagined. More importantly, its all-important R level (all-important to the UK anyway – it has never much featured in the Swedish discussion) has in fact been below the safe level of 1 for the last few weeks.

Coronavirus updates: COVID-19 was present in Europe in December, doctor claims
Virus was present in Europe in late December, doctor claims

The novel coronavirus may have reached Europe much earlier than originally thought.

Dr. Yves Cohen, an intensive care chief in Paris, told French news channel BFMTV during a live interview Sunday that they had retrospectively identified a positive case at Jean-Verdier Hospital in the northeastern Paris suburb of Bondy on Dec. 27. Doctors reanalyzed samples from molecular diagnostic tests of 24 patients in December and January who were suffering from pneumonia-like illness but had tested negative, Cohen said. Tests for COVID-19 were not being offered at that time.

One of the patient's samples tested positive for COVID-19. Doctors even tested the sample twice to be sure, Cohen said.

Massachusetts Walmart Ravaged By COVID, 21% Of Employees Infected, Store Closed

(Twenty-one percent. Wow! That's less that the rate for the entire 1.4 million residents of the Bronx. Yep, 27% of the population of the Bronx have antibodies for Covid-19, as do 21% of the whole of NY City. So it's most likely that the Massachusetts Walmart is no more "Ravaged by COVID" that the rest of Massachusetts. (But headline writers gotta keep you wound up and reading the bilge they've got to sell.

Why Sweden Has Already Won The Debate On COVID-19 "Lockdown" Policy
As Europe and North America continue suffering their steady economic and social decline as a direct result of imposing "lockdown" on their populations, other countries have taken a different approach to dealing with the coronavirus threat. You wouldn’t know it by listening to western politicians or mainstream media stenographers, there are also non-lockdown countries. They are led by Sweden, Iceland, Belarus, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Surprisingly to some, their results have been as good or better than the lockdown countries, but without having to endure the socio-economic chaos we are now witnessing across the world. For this reason alone, Sweden and others like them, have already won the policy debate, as well as the scientific one too.
The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) website for the coronavirus lists the total deaths from COVID-19 – the disease caused by the virus – as 37,308 in the United States. That’s a much lower number than what has been reported in the media or by other coronavirus trackers. For example, the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus tracker, lists the number of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. at 65,645.

Even more confusing, a separate CDC website – dedicated exclusively to the novel coronavirus – lists the total COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. as 64,283. The NCHS website was updated on May 1, while the CDC’s coronavirus-specific website says it was updated on May 2.

Pennsylvania has removed hundreds of COVID-19 deaths from the official death count after coroners pointed out the state’s health department numbers did not match their own.

Nolte: They Told Us Lockdowns Were About Flattening the Curve. They Lied

In order to flatten the curve of the coronavirus, the politicians told us we must lockdown and be quarantined while our economy collapsed. They told us we had to flatten the curve to ensure our health care system was not overwhelmed by the sick and dying. They told us that if the health care system was overwhelmed, people would die who could otherwise be saved. They told us losing people who can be saved is intolerable, and America agreed…

And now we know we were suckers…

Now we know the politicians lied to us.

This was never about saving the healthcare system from crashing, because we have saved the system from crashing, and most of us are still in these goddamned lockdowns.

They lied.

Not all the politicians lied. But most of the politicians lied, most especially Democrat governors….

My Democrat governor, Roy Cooper, just canceled school for the rest of the year and extended our ludicrous, pointless, statewide, one-size-fits-all lockdown to May 8.

Why?

There’s no good answer.

Among others, all of California, Michigan, Hawaii, and Wisconsin are locked down through the end of May. Oregon is locked down until July 6!
Why?
There’s no good answer.
There is no threat the healthcare system’s going to crash in any of those states. You might be able to convince me there’s a small risk in some urban areas — in Detroit or Los Angeles or Milwaukee, but 95 percent of those states are completely out of the woods. But these Democrat governors refuse to open any part of their state.

My North Carolina county is completely out of the woods…
We had nine cases here and no deaths.
Nine cases.

Zero deaths.

We’re still locked down, even though there’s a full-blown medical center in my county.

In my five county area we’ve had fewer than 100 cases and one death. Each of those counties has a hospital. There is no chance these health systems will crash. None. So why are we still locked down?

Even in our most densely populated area, Charlotte, there have been only 1651 cases and 49 deaths.

The curve here in North Carolina, and the curve in 95 percent of the country is not just bent, it’s crushed, decimated, destroyed — and let’s now take this opportunity to go ahead and say the following out loud: in much of the country there was never any real danger of overwhelming the health care system.

The experts were wrong.
(We're supposed to believe that politicians lied without reason? Just out of dumbness? Come on, they're not that dumb.)

  1. I am in Alaska and I am in lockdown. Death count for the state of Alaska according to the CDC link? Zero.

The CDC link (the one with the 37K count) is continually being revised upward. What I thought was a precipitous drop 10K to 5K to 461, now is less impressive. The numbers appear to be declining, but not so sharply. The 461 count is now over 3K. I am not why the CDC would quickly have the 10K count for 4/11 and then more slowly, much more slowly, arrive at what is now around 10K for 4/18. Not that this is necessarily a sign of nefarious data manipulation. Their explanation for their relative slowness is that their counts are taken based on death certificates, and death certificates take time to be completed and filed. That, to me, doesn't explain why one week the data would come in more quickly than in the other weeks. I also wonder why we don't have the data for the week ending 5/1. I've been waiting for the data at the end of each week and so far this is the longest delay before they've posted a number, IIRC.

That CDC link also offers some interesting wiggle-room commentary on the way their deaths diagnosed as caused by Covid-19 has been arrived at. As I read it, (I need to read it again) they are almost admitting not all of these deaths are certain to have been due to Covid-19. They even speak of a new coding for Covid-19. I would like to find out when that took effect, how widespread and standardized has been its institution, and so on. We're probably going to be sorting all of this out in the years to come (hopefully we'll be able to do that).

It looks like an evidence fiasco of mammoth and catastrophic proportions. People talk about the crumbling of the US's infrastructure due to neglect. Well, it has crumbled all right. These systems of detection and response are not up to par and weren't up to the task. That's not the reason people panicked (which is the real catastrophe) but in matters of life and death such as this could have been, they need a bulwark of reliability to either tell them how to protect themselves or to confidently reassure them to calm down.

    1. "not all of these deaths are certain to have been due to Covid-19."

LOL. Here's the finding of a Japanese study:

A total of 450 consecutive autopsies performed at a geriatric hospital in Japan between February 2000 and August 2002 were studied. We evaluated the concordance rate, sensitivity, and specificity of major UCODs (cancer, heart disease, and pneumonia) reported on death certificates compared with a reference standard of pathologist assessment based on autopsy data and clinical records.

The concordance rate was relatively high for cancer (81%) but low for heart disease (55%) and pneumonia (9%). The overall concordance rate was 48%.

The false identication rate for pneumonia was 91%, and remember Covid19 is primarily a respiratory disease, easily confused with pneumonia.

  3. Title 32 allows the Governor, with the approval of the President or the Secretary of Defense, to order a member to duty for operational Homeland Defense activities in accordance with the following sections of U.S. Code (USC): 1. ... 32 USC § 902 - Homeland Defense activities: funds.

They will implement martial law, but as long as the MSM cooperates in following the dominant narrative of "national disaster" and no one determined as an "official source" calls it martial law, it won't be.

    1. Yes, what is the motivation?

      What's driving the Covid hysteria?

That's the issue the media haven't touched.

Is this an exercise, maybe a joint US-China exercise, to rehearse responses to a real biowarfare agent, something as deadly as the Black Death or ebola?

That would explain why no one attempts to explain the apparently irrational reaction to a virus not much worse than the season flu that kills very few under the age of 65.

That would make sense. A lock-down would give time to look for an effective treatment, a drug, a vaccine or a monoclonal antibody, perhaps.

But if that's the explanation, it indicates that the Western nations are as subordinate to the ruling elite as the people of China.

So does anyone have a more optimistic explanation. Universal ruling elite imbecility? probably not.

A cover for a major economic manipulation:

      to enrich the smart money?

to inflate away the savings of the majority?

to set global GDP on a permanent downward course to counter global warming?

      Other ideas?

  4. "But if that's the explanation, it indicates that the Western nations are as subordinate to the ruling elite as the people of China."

This is the crucial observation: they are subordinate to a ruling elite. What's more, the people of western nations and China are subordinate to the same ruling elite.

What's happened has happened on a GLOBAL scale!Everyone is subordinate now to the same fricking elite.

Okay, so there are a few nation states here who appear to have successfully resisted, and thus embarrassed and upset the ruling elite. Off the top of my head I can think of about six or so. Out of 195 nation states worldwide, that's approximately 3%. These exceptions will be forced to succumb now that they are so severely outnumbered. This is almost a given in that their success is misunderstood or ignored.

This is the so-called world government the plutocrats have hungered for the last one hundred years (or more).

It was interesting to me when it was revealed that the lab in Wuhan had recently received 3.7 million dollars from the U.S. government. Even if it turned out this lab is responsible for engineering this corona virus, it won't mean China is responsible and the U.S. is the victim. The world plutocrats are responsible and the world's people are the victim. The hapless victim.

If I seem obsessed, that's because I am.

LOL. Here in the West we're mostly all educated. Have a university degree, even maybe a postgraduate degree.

Then, if we really had a half decent education, we will surely discover that much of what educated people are supposed to believe, what Ron Unz assimilates from the NY Times daily, or perhaps much of what our university professors told us, it obviously bunk. Then we naturally get wound up about it. Not only are we being fed lies, we have been lied into believing that the liars are worthy of our trust.

Trouble is, one cannot get to the bottom of every lie the governing elite and their media enablers tell us. Thus there is a risk of damaging consequences of a hyper-reaction.

For me, an antidote is a walk in the park observing the progression of the seasons in the emergence of flora and the migrations of the wildlife. At least what I see there with my owns eyes is real.
